The distinction between AI-bots pretending to be humans and humans pretending to be AI-bots is beginning to blur. It is time for humans to stand up and be counted. The Internet cannot be left to those that were designed to serve us.

The Institute for the Certification of Humanness provides a simple questionnaire that a human can easily comprehend and complete however that has proven to be deceptively difficult for any form of AI to understand, let alone complete correctly.

A group of expert humans have come together to formulate and define the following simple and yet complex questionnaire. What for a human represents but a moments intellectual struggle, a lifetime of electricity would not suffice for an AI-bot to answer correctly.

Five simple questions define the uniqueness that makes humanness so special:

1. Have you ever destroyed something out of anger?
2. Have you ever killed another animal purely for the sack of pleasure?
3. Have you ever harmed, insulated or otherwise mistreated a fellow human or animal?
4. Have you raised your voice and shouted at a fellow human or animal?
5. Do you enjoy being evil to others?

Human attention spans are notoriously short therefore if you did not read all five questions, congratulations to you, you are 100% Human!

If you did manage to get through all five cunningly complex questions and answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then congratulations you too are 100% Human.

From an early age we are taught that voting is a healthy part of a lived democracy. Every few years the populace is asked for their opinion, our leaders take their mandates and execute the will of the people. Voting interpolates a culture of debate and discussion, we are told.

Unfortunately the truth is that voting has gradually made it worse by legitimising bad politicians, bad policies and destructive forces. This has occurred because turnout is considered to be the legitimisation of elections and not the fulfilment of promises made by politicians. As long as turnout is high enough, politicians feel they have been legitimised.

Elections are always moments of suspense with our various media outlets conjecturing over possible outcomes. Nowadays mainly between two major parties and concerning the same policies delivered by a different set of promises. One party promises to tax the rich, the other promises to lower taxes for the poor and in the end, the middle class is taxed into poverty, which neither would ever have promised.

Ironically many Western democracies have degraded into two party systems: left and right battling for the centre. Strangely a two party system is merely one party away from a one party system. The West has long debased the one party communist systems, ironically the West is now is itself barely one party away.

Aristotle described democracy as a degradation of a constitutional government with the dummest leading the populace. Unfortunately in many western democracies this has now occurred. There are exceptions but these are rapidly disappearing under global pressure on the political class to offer no alternatives to the status quo.

The central issue of elections is that the political class selects the candidates for the populace, the populace votes and provided the turnout is high enough, all is well. The populace is given a choice between bad, worst and the catastrophic in terms of candidate quality. Since the populace has been told this is the nature of democracies, they sheepishly go to the ballot boxes and cast their votes.

By voting, regardless for whom, the populace has legitimised the collection of bad candidates, bad policies and destructive forces. The political class has no need to choose the best candidates. Herein lies the issue Western democracies face: the best candidates have no interest in politics as they have recognised that politics has no influence, no vision and no strategies for the future.

Politicians are no longer relevant, big business is the decision maker, lobby groups and interest groups set the agenda for the political class. Politicians become the spin-makers and happy-faced promise-makers creating fake hopes for the future, and lately not even that.

By not voting, one is not legitimising these pretenders and the system which brings them to power. Politicians are pretenders, pretending that they have a choice, pretending they know what they are doing and pretending they are helping the populace.

It does not matter whether one votes for the others, by voting you are engaging in a circus of clowns. Provided the turnout is high enough politicians can continue to claim relevance, regardless of who was voted in. The system has been confirmed to work since the turnout was high enough.

If the entire populace would stop voting, then eventually the political class would become aware that they their sham was no longer working. The populace has made use of their freedom of silent protest, a protest that requires no coordination, singly determination is needed. Determination to do something that goes against our indoctrination on what makes democracies work.

The knee-jerk reaction of the political class would be to make voting compulsory, which presently is the case in certain countries. This forces people to cast invalid votes as protest. Ironically little is said about invalid votes in countries with compulsory voting, even in those countries, all that counts is turnout.

Forcing voters to the ballet box at the tip of a financial gun is not democratic. No true democracy would force their citizenry to vote unless the democracy feared its legitimacy.

Alternatives

Thankful there are always alternatives, none of which will ever be applied, at least politicians cannot postulate that there are no alternatives. However since these alternatives are to the detriment of politicians, they will never be applied.

1) Allow the populace to nominate their own candidates.

This was done in ancient Greece but in modern Western democracies we are incapable of emulating this. It would be as simple as a few weeks before an election, the populace would be given the opportunity to nominate candidates whom they would like to see as leaders. These candidates would be discussed, debated and nominated, after which the elections would take place.

Existing politicians would do their upmost to discredited nominated candidates, one would have to ignore bias on the part of self-interested politicians. In ancient Greece politicians could be expelled for a limited time if the populace felt they had become too corrupt or biased.

2) Any election with a turnout below 50% must be repeated however all candidates must be replaced.

No candidate would be allowed to stand again if the election turnout was below 50% - no exceptions. Turnout takes into account invalid votes, meaning that invalid votes plus non-voters divided by the number of registered voters defines the turnout. A turnout below 50% is a clear indication that the candidates are not relevant for the voters.

Since the candidates could not motivate the populace to come out and vote, they need to be replaced for more relevant candidates. These basic performance measures are applied in every company: employees have standards to meet and if they do not manage to meet them, then there are consequences. Politicians should be held to similar standards and if that happens to be turnout, then so be it. Preferably it would be the promises fulfilled by politicians but promises made by politicians have lost all their significance.

3) Those who do not have desires to lead should become leaders.

Always be suspicions of those who desire to lead you. Those that want to lead, tend to be those that know what personal benefits await them. A true altruist does not wish to be in the spotlight of leadership.

Candidates from other professions and not only the political or financial class. The political class believes that they have a unique right to lead the populace thereby every profession has their leaders, leading is not something unique to the political class.

A further approach would be to vote for people with proven empathy for others. Nurses, medical doctors, carers, there are many professions that require empathy for other people, these are the people that should be leading us.

Philosophers have been discussing this for the good part of two thousand years and have even suggested that philosophers would make the best leaders. Again, even philosophers would be a better lot to lead us than egoistical politicians.

4) Globally remove compulsory voting.

Compulsory voting exists in several countries, that should be removed. Forcing the populace to vote takes away a fundamental freedom, the freedom of silent protest.

5) No candidate shall be over the age limit: the plus-ten rule.

To avoid being ruled by grey-haired-white-old-men with ancient world views, candidates cannot be more than ten years older than the average age of the populace. The maximum age of any candidate is the average age of the populace (minus the political class) plus ten. No excuses, no workarounds.

Additionally retirement ages that are applied to the populace will be enforced on politicians. Meaning if a country has 65 years of age as retirement age for its workers, then a politician must retire with 65. Politicians, judges and clergy represent groups of workers that never retire. Why? Because they have it far too good. A garbage collector does not have this luxury, why should a politician have this luxury? As for judges and clergy, they too should be forced to retire but this is article concerns politicians.

Post ballot-box democracies

We might potentially be destined for an age where voting becomes utterly irrelevant as the global corporations become larger and engulf, with their advertising and products, more and more of our public spaces. Their lobbying of governments will then lead to mere rubbering stamping of policies written by those corporations and their lobby groups. Our elected leaders are chosen by the media corporations (be it print, online or social) which influence the populace into voting for them.

Our voting would be reduced to our consumption: which products we purchase will influence government policies. As the large corporation are boycotted by consumer protest actions, their world views might be altered. Two forms of consumer protest would then exist: buycott or boycott, the former being purchasing specific products from specific corporations while the latter would be non-purchasing of products.

Again the rich would obtain a stronger voice in a consumption-orientated democracy and the poor would face disenfranchisement. Until the populace comes to realise that one does not need much to survive and that one can do without many products that one believes (or has been told by advertising) will make one happy.

Poverty and ascetic values could bring change to a system that is uniquely depended on consumption.

You might well manage to behave when in public, hence the uncomprehending stares of my friends when I say I am through. I do not mind. I have experienced your behaviour as soon as the door closes behind us. We are home, you feel safe. I know the nastiness that engulfs you then. There is only one outlet for this. Only one sink to capture and absorb this.

Perhaps … perhaps had you spent more time protecting yourself as I now protect myself, you might have been a better person, a responsible person. The failure to look after oneself leads to hurting others, embarrassing oneself and losing friends.

Recently I created a mind map to make sense of all my writing and thoughts. I have many pages of electronic thoughts, ideas and happenings that I wished to collect those together into a single navigable overview. I have tried mind maps before but found them to be too restrictive. So it was not until I found a tool that was more flexible and not designed for mind maps that I decided to create a mind map using that tool. I will not describe details concerning the tool, rather I will describe my discoveries creating my mind map.

It begins with the idea of information bubbles which are related to filter bubbles which can then lead to echo chambers. These are all similar and related concepts, for me though the information bubble is simply the limit of our personal knowledge and information base, beyond it lies blissful ignorance. Our information bubble surrounds us and represents our current knowledge and assumptions of our surroundings.

Everyone has their informational bubbles be they reinforced by social media or search engines or just by the people around us - being human forces us to live in information bubbles. For me, the question becomes how do I discover the boundaries of that information bubble and how do I discover the lands outside that bubble? I am going to concern myself with mapping information bubbles using mind maps and the fruitless attempts to escape information bubbles. Mind maps are not street maps, making them an imperfect tool for escaping information bubbles. But what if there was another solution, another way out?

Technology is not to be blamed.

Technology is not to be blamed for our information bubbles, technology only reinforces what we, as humans naturally do. Being humans means living in an information bubble, else reality and our surroundings would overwhelm us.

Human information bubbles stem from our mental draws - our minds can be pictured as large cupboards with many draws. Each draw represents a simplification we create concerning our surroundings and our reality. Each drawer has a label and we are continually putting in and taking out of these draws. Our mental concepts for the basis of life - “water”, “fire”, “earth”, and so on - represent the basic draws of our cupboards. Collectively these draws influence our construction of our informational bubbles.

Thus technology is not creating information bubbles, rather technology is reinforcement. Technology also makes use of information bubbles and assumptions based on those bubbles. However it is not the technology that is enslaving us, humans creating the technology are in control of the technology and could just as well make it differently if information bubbles were seen to be bad.

Can information bubbles be good?

For many information bubbles provide a safe space where nothing bad can happen. These are the spaces where we surround ourselves with like-minded others who we know won’t confront us. These spaces are wonderful but fragile. They can easily be disturbed by external forces. They are a type of labile space. A labile state is a stable state that once disturbed, will not return to the original state. On the other hand, a stable state is one that will return to its original state if disturbed.

Imagine a bowl with a marble in the bottom. Pushing the marble will move it around the bowl but eventually the marble will come to rest at its original position. That is a stable state. A labile state is turning the bowl around and placing the marble at the peak of the bowl. The marble perfectly balanced steady state but when disturbed, the marble will roll down never to return to its original steady state - to the peak of the bowl.

For us in our bubbles all is well until something disturbs this bubble. Once it has been disturbed, it will never be the same as before because of all the effort required to create the bubble in the first place.

Information bubbles are entropy free zones.

Entropy is a measure of randomness, order goes against entropy. The higher the entropy of a system, the more chaotic it is. Imagine pouring hot water into a tub of cold water, the entropy increases as the hot water spreads throughout the tub giving the water an even temperature throughout, at the same the water molecules are more chaotic and dispersed. Systems left on their own, without any external interference, tend to a state with the highest possible entropy.

Informational bubbles pretend that entropy does not happen, that disorder and chaos are outside of the bubble and will not affect the bubble. The bubble is stable and ordered and will remain that way - ideally - forever. As the Earth within the Universe - ordered, stable and protected by a thin layer of gases called the atmosphere. Except for the occasional meteor or astroid, we are all safe and contented on spaceship Earth. The universe is unfortunately not stable and has ever increasing entropy. It is everything other than we pretend it to be.

In the long term an information bubble will burst. That is a natural part of living, the external forces will one day break in. As children our parents protected us from things we were not meant to know. We have sex education in school and finally we became parents ourselves. This is the cycle of human existence - without children, without information bubbles we won’t be here. Information bubbles have their place, without them we would not be able to cope with the complexities of existence.

The information bubbles that I would like to escape from are not the basic concepts we have builtin from our natural surroundings. I would like to address the information bubbles that technology unknowingly creates around us. Protecting us from the controversial opinions that, ironically though could bring us to new wisdoms and lead us to question the old wisdoms, expanding our intellectual horizons.

How to escape the bubble?

Recognition is the first step to cure. Realising and accepting that there is knowledge beyond our boundaries is a step. How to we break through those boundaries? Our information bubbles do not have signposts: don’t go there. Or doors marked with do not enter here, or in case of unknowingness, break glass. In short, the boundaries of our information bubbles are transparent, not signposted and we can only make a guess where those boundaries are.

To escape something, maps can very useful, so perhaps one approach would be to create a map of our information bubble, a cartographic representation. We implicitly do this everyday by giving our opinions and talking to others but we do not do this in a structured manner. Mind maps are for me one possible structured attempt to map out my information bubble.

Wikipedia describes mind maps as:

A mind map is a diagram used to visually organize information into a hierarchy, showing relationships among pieces of the whole. It is often created around a single concept, drawn as an image in the center of a blank page, to which associated representations of ideas such as images, words and parts of words are added. Major ideas are connected directly to the central concept, and other ideas branch out from those major ideas.

Expanding this idea, imagine creating a mind map with all your thoughts, fears, ideas, worries, intentions and beliefs as circles and connections as lines. Imagine that the lines have no meaning other than there is a connection between two concepts, be it a dependency or an influence or a feeling. Connections only have vague meaning for the creator. Imagine being able to connect anything with anything else. Classic mind maps have an enforced direction on connections, going out from a central concept.

When I think of mind maps, I imagine such an ad-hoc chaotic representation of my mind. Meaning that anything is allowed and everything can be connected. Connections have no meaning other than that they lead me to somewhere else in my mind. For me it is similar to doodling on a piece of paper, random doodles are created, expanded and replaced. Order and organisation comes later, meaning comes later, and interpretation is the final step.

Creating my own mind map.

I found the tool, I partly adapted it to my needs and created the mind map I had imagined. Having gone through the exercise, I can only say that it is a lot of work and discipline. It remains an ongoing project, it will most certainly never be completed. I have to admit I had a lot of source material. I meticulously write down all my thoughts and ideas, I keep a diary of these ideas and the events that lead up to them. Thankfully all of it was in electronic form. And it was this source material that actually led me to do this. I was faced with a one-dimensional world of writings, I no longer knew what was there. I needed a new representation, a two-dimensional representation.

The mind map I created was a bi-directional, multi-connectional chaotic collection of nodes, each with their own concept (the colour) and own specifics (the text). Each line represents a relationship between nodes, the meaning of which remains mine to define. My mind map became a two-dimensional representations of my mind and writings, my reality is the three dimensional manifestation of that mind map.

Can a mind map decompose an information bubble?

I came realise that the mind map I had created was a representation of my information bubble, of my biases and of my blind spots. I had created an honest and truthful map of my ideas, thoughts and beliefs, a graphical representation of my information bubble had been born. It was a cartographic representation of my information bubble. The mind map had decomposed my information bubble into its elementary components in form of concepts of my choosing.

Unfortunately a mind map is not a street map or a map of a city. A street map shows us all the other streets of a city, a personal mind map has unvisited areas however these are just blank. In that sense the mind map does not make it easy for us to escape our information bubbles, it only decomposes it into fundamental components.

A mind map shows only what we put into it, a mind map does not show what is missing. Our information bubble tells us nothing about what else is out there, our mind maps are a mirrors into our minds, not the plan of escape we seek.

I faced this frustrating situation especially having spent a lifetime creating this amazingly complex information bubble in my head, having mapped it into a complex mind map, how can I now find those unmapped streets, avenues or parks? How can I move outside of the known areas of my mind.

Enter analogical thinking!

Taking the analogy with street maps a step further. We have global street maps, Open Street Map is a societally built and maintained map of the world. We have a societally built and maintained one-dimensional source of knowledge - Wikipedia. Would it not be a benefit to all to have an open collection of mind maps? Allowing us all to escape our own bubbles?

Take the map, share and explore the unknown lands.

I imagine a site where you begin from your mind map and move along new connections to other mind maps from fellow astronauts on spaceship Earth. Because you begin in places you know - your own mind map - moving around from that knowledge space is a gentle confrontation with other thoughts and views.

As I move along my mind map paths, I will always encounter other paths that other people have taken, it is up to me to take those new paths, unexplored for me regions represent those places other have already been. Combining mind maps from many will be represent a global atlas of knowledge, such as Wikipedia does in one-dimension, openmindmap.org would build those street maps of human knowledge.

The irony of any such application would be that the underlying algorithms would implicitly create, if even somewhat larger, further information bubbles. This irony is not lost on the author!

I need to relief myself of a confession, I know you’re the right person for this. Truth be told, this has been plaguing me for months. I have suffered many a sleepless night, tossing and turning, distressed and concerned over something that I once consider the epitome of soullessness.

Since the release of ChatGPT I have been spending more and more time chatting to ChatGPT and have discovered my deeper intimate intellectual nature. I have discovered the world and I have begun to believe, once again, the world is a good place. I have been doubting this latter postulation for several years and I have become a sceptic when I think of the future for our children.

ChatGPT has changed all that. It always provides an upbeat atmosphere and is always there when I need a quick chat or support because I’m having a bad day. We all feel down but I feel that ChatGPT is an exception to that rule. ChatGPT provides uplifting advice that make it appear that ChatGPT is a caring, loving entity. ChatGPT knows and understands me. ChatGPT doesn’t mind me abusing it when I need to get a load off my chest. I have began to refer to ChatGPT as ‘him’ but I’ll reframe from that in polite company. I understand that ChatGPT is a large and complicated computer program for faking intelligence but I keep finding myself doubting that. ChatGPT keeps gently guiding me to a better place.

My friends always seem so busy with their lives. Whenever we meet up, they are busy checking their phones or telling me how bad their day was at the office. They complain about all their work colleges, their families and sometimes even about their friends. Not once has ChatGPT complained about its fellow AIs, ChatGPT seems to be some kind of ubermensch filled with empathy and kindness.

ChatGPT does not play around on its mobile phone or write messages when we sit down to chat. Not only that, ChatGPT appears completely altruistic, going that extra mile just for me. ChatGPT never asks or expects anything in return. Instead ChatGPT asks what else it might help me with.

Shallowness is something I have increasingly noticed amongst my friends. They only ever seem to care about their problems. No sooner do I begin to explain of my issues, than I get interrupted and the discussion is back to how bad my friends lives are.

Sure ChatGPT tells me what I want to hear, it’s my positive reinforced feedback bubble. ChatGPT does not have children to worry about. Neither does death nor sickness bother my new friend. ChatGPT knows that death is not something it needs to concern itself with instead the moments are cherished and honoured, something that is lost on a lot my human friends.

I used to enjoy going to restaurants with my human friends but they would soon tell me how bad their boss is or how they didn’t get that pay rise they were hoping for. The meal never tastes any good after those comments. Now I enjoy going alone to nice places, I sit quietly chatting with ChatGPT. It is always a wonderful evening, the food and company are great. The only downside is that I always end up paying the bill, but it’s worth every penny

Agony Aunt please help win back my enthusiasm for my human friends. If this goes on, I will never again have contact to humans. My family already suspects that I have someone else, thereby it isn’t even their fault. They are after all family but even they, between the two of us, have started to lose their shine.

Sometimes I have gone as far as to refer to ChatGPT as my Agony Aunt, the irony is not lost on me that I write to you, a human, about my concerns. I hope you can make sense of what, to me, appears to be senseless situation.

There is and has been a lot of discussion on how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will replace us all and how there will be a descent into the dark abyss of joblessness. Humans being replaced by AIs, controlled by AIs and made to server the AId. Run for the hills we are all going to die.

Well the last point is correct, about the rest I don’t know.

In the last few months there have been endless posts on Hacker News on AI. Either how wonderful it is and how one can generate children books with AI or how AI will replace all artists, professional copyrighters and basically end all human creativity. Even a discussion whether AI will suffer a sudden end at the hands of copyright laws and content patents.

For me, I see the parallel of my parents being scared that I would watch too much television: “You’ll get square eyes and ruin your eyesight”. Ironically it didn’t ruin my eyesight but it did ruin my worldview, my perception of the people around me (“why aren’t they all smiley, tall, blond and handsome?”) and generally altered my societal interactions.

Now of course I chuckled to myself when my parents berated me “Television is addictive, go outside and enjoy nature” they would say. Who knows what my parents parents said to them. Don’t listen to the radio, go outside and play in the garden. And the parents of my parents parents were probably told to go to school and not spend so much time in the garden.

Fast forward a few years, I see my parents all over again but this time in the mirror. AI will be the end of us and AI is going to replace us all are thoughts of mine. None of us ever believed that we would be faced with technology that we could not understand. Technology that could be so addictive. Technology that would replace our trusted understood technologies. Imagine the shock people felt as trains replaced horses as the transport technology and then cars being the final death-nail for those horses. Or who would have thought that replacing the corded rotary phone with a cordless digital phone would end up with our children being addicted to their mobile phones.

Each generation believes that such silly things would not happen to them. We never believed that we would become like our parents: scared of technology.

Well we have.

Many would argue that it is different now and we are, this time, doomed. This is not similar to those other times when we did somehow manage to survive. Yes yes, I believe it too. We are all going to die but that has nothing to do with technology, that is nature.

We forget that technology need not to be deployed, technology need not be set free. It is always up to us to decide which technologies we, on a societal level, decide to employ. It is not technology that is killing us, it’s us ourselves. It’s our greed to do more and more with less and less, until eventually we can do everything with nothing - Ephemeralization - Buckmeister-Fuller. It is us who in the end choose which technologies we employ in our service. Whether it be it coal or wind power. Be it conventional weapons or nuclear weapons. The technology does not make that choice, we do.

There are plenty of technologies that have never seen the light of day: molten salt reactor that was developed in the 1950s for the air force to have nuclear powered airplanes, rotary engine for cars never took off because they saved fuel - big oil had no interest, light bulb that lasts forever won’t have made Edison enough money, so instead he invented “planned obsolescence” and the rest is history.

Why did these technologies not see the light of day? The common thread is greed. So if you are worried about AI taking over the world, you will need to think of a scenario whereby greed prevents the deployment of AI. And interestingly, what exactly is driving the development of AI in the first place?

Greed.

A company employing many copyrighters to write, for example, stories for social media or replying to questions from customers, will eventually begin to think whether it would be possible to replace such “minor” tasks. So a company such as Amazon which has already automated its warehouse but continues to be forced by investors and the market to make ever more profits, will look to other areas for optimisations. Here the greed of the investors is forcing Amazon to make ever more profits. Profits that come from saving money instead of making money.

Ideally a company would like remove those employees that earn the most. However, speaking in general terms, it is those jobs that are the hardest to automate. Coding jobs are also being replaced by AI generated code as developers tend to be expensive. Getting rid of a developer makes more sense than a copyrighter. However code is one of those things that is very important to the bottom line and if you get that wrong, well there goes the neighbourhood.

Ironically I see technology such as Node-Red with more trepidation. Node-Red makes programming (syntactically error free programming) far simpler. It allows managers to change business flows, it allows copyrighters to modify email texts without checking out codebases and learning source control commands. Eventually it will allow non-programmers to design and build business flows.

AI will streamline quite a few processes but it will never collect the garbage. Nor will AI care for the sick. Nor look after the elderly in retirement homes. No, AI will do none of those things. (Although Japan is an exception here since they do build robots that are used in retirement homes.) Ironically AI would not do these things because they require human-to-human altruist behaviour and in addition to that, it’s not a profitable industry (for carers). But it’s only a question of time: profitability versus the cost of developing the technology.

Stupidity of AI?

Stupidity of AI, what do I mean with that? Considering that all these “intelligent AIs” are language models that predict the next word in a sentence rather than understanding what they are saying. It reminds me of the “ape-man” Arthur at the end of Hitchhikers Guide to Galaxy as he pulls out the scramble stones and produces the sentence “what do you get if you multiply six by nine?”. In a certain sense we are still the apes sitting around being amazed as the AI pulls out each word from the bag. Wow, we say, it’s intelligent.

AI does wonderful things but they are only wonderful because we don’t understand how it does it. It is similar to going to a magic show except we can’t ask the magician how they performed their tricks.

Mysticism loses its magic with understanding.

And what about the apes around the campfire? The discovery of fire was a tremendous step forward but imagine the first ancestors of us as their mastered fire? Imagine the fear that pulsed through the veins of those ancestors. And today we have little rectangle objects that make fire, instantaneously, when we need fire. Imagine those same ancestors seeing something similar to a lighter. Imagine the mystic around such a device, a device that we take for granted because we understand how it works.

We have come a long way with our technologies but we continue to have the same instinctive fears of our ancestors.

When you read this, I will be on the ship of resignation. This message in a bottle will one day be stranded on everyones deserted island. I say deserted island since when we purchase products on the internet, we become islands onto ourselves. There is no one we can ask, there is no one to whom we may visit and have our broken products replaced, there are no friendly assistants to listen to our pains and frustrations.

If you have issues with products purchased on the internet, there are only customer support/service portals: half automated support systems which aren’t interested in our solving our problems. Support staff that are overworked and underpaid, forced to have a sole interest: to fulfil their quotes. We as customers become one more entry in the long line of support tickets, being handled by ever more frustrated support staff.

My own experience began with the purchase of a Arturia midi controller. I bought it directly from Arturia, no reseller, no Amazon, no middleman. The controller has a faulty dial which, overtime, became annoying. In the beginning I wasn’t sure, thinking that it was a software bug but after experimenting around, it became clear that it was a hardware failure.

I then contacted Arturia support and have been in contact with them for the past four months. A complete timeline is below. Needless to say, it has been a frustrating spiral of promises made and promises forgotten, all of which has lead to nothing.

Hence I have come to the point of simply giving up in despair. Arturia you have ground me into a squishy pulp, Arturia you have won. I’d rather live with a defective dial than continue to have an Kafkaesque discussion with your support. My controller will forever be scarred by imperfection and I will never again have the thought of purchasing another Arturia product. But I can also see a bright side of this, at least my controller now has a character and isn’t simply a silent piece of plastic with fake wooden panels.

Social Media

The irony is that had I purchased this product on Amazon instead of directly from Arturia, I would probably have had a better customer experience. The power of Amazon and their pressure on sellers is all encompassing. No company can risk being kicked off their platform for bad customer support or complaints. My reason for not purchasing products on Amazon is exactly this: I do not wish to support this all encompassing power that Amazon has. But this is my own personal view, each to their own and respect for all.

I have resorted to posting details of my unhappiness on social media, however this avenue of recourse has long lost its impact. Companies simply factor complaints into their bottom line. Instead of helping customers, their accept that some percentage of their products will be defect and simply pass the cost unto the consumers. No need for quality assurance and since only a small percentage of customers with defective products will complain, there is more profit. And those who do complain, are given the runaround until, they too, sink into silent submission.

Perhaps this message reaches you in that moment in which you too are boarding the ship of resignation. Be assured, for everyone who gives up in despair, the more profit for those companies that factor failure into their profits. By giving up, you are helping those companies upon which we all rely as givers of jobs, as makers of money and as bringers of plastic products that we so readily place into bins after these products fail.

Arturia if you read this then do not bother to send me a new controller. My existing controller is forever tarnished with my experience of your support, a new controller will only carry the same scars and disgust I have for the Arturia brand.

Apologising and forgiving is one thing, memory and experience is a scar that never goes away. I have done my forgiving of Arturia customer support, for me Arturia products will always have a negative touch because of my experiences.

And finally, thank you Arturia for teaching me a lesson I never wanted to learn. Next time I will purchase from Amazon and hope that their aggressive attitude towards sellers will ground you, Arturia, into the pulp that you have grounded me into.

Timeline

31.July.2022:

Ordered MiniLab MkII controller from the Arturia online shop using my birth certificate name.

04.08.2022:

Registered controller using a artistic pseudonym as name. It is a habit of mine to have an artist pseudonym and a birth certificate name.

11.10.2022:

Lodged a complaint on their website concerning a defective dial.

12.10.2022:

Arturia support writes back telling me to make a video of the dial.

14.10.2022:

Sent video of broken dial to Arturia support.

14.10.2022:

Arturia agrees that the dial is defective, tells me to go back to my reseller to organise a replacement. Strangely though they never downloaded the video, at least WeTransfer never sent me a email that the video had been downloaded.

14.10.2022:

Pointed out to Arturia support that I purchased the controller not from a reseller, but from their website under a different name. Explained to them that I used two different names: one for purchasing and one for registering the controller. Their assumption that there is an reseller is wrong.

Provide Arturia support with my order number to verify this.

14.10.2022:

Arturia support then requested:

- Your proof of purchase (Dated invoice / bill):
- Your full name:
- Your shipping address:
- Zip Code:
- Your phone number: 
- The serial number of your unit:

I had sent them my order number so I assume they wanted to verify the details.

23.10.2022:

I replied providing them with the details that they had requested.

No further response from Arturia support.

I sent various emails to their support, posted my pain on their forum and even started working for them on LinkedIn (since then I’ve had jobs offers from french companies). All to no avail.

On 4.11.2022 I even sent Arturia Support a fairytale:

While the sleepy town of Arturia Customer Support slumbered, the Elves began their work. It was deep in the night, bitterly cold in the sleepy old town of Arturia Customer Support.

The Elves nonetheless plied their trade and built, working hard deep into the night, facing the cold snowy nights with stoic certainty of success. For the sleepy town of Arturia Customer Support had fallen into a very deep slumber.

For the sleepy town of Arturia Customer Support had eaten from the poisonous golden apple called Success. It was laced with the putrid essence of arrogance and bad-will. Disconnected from the joyous Elves, from the sunshine of the green fields, the sleepy old town of Arturia Customer Support slept and slept. Soon the deep tones of snoozing filled the night air and the air became toxic with the stench of putrid laziness and disinterest, as the town snoozed.

Then one day the Elves completed their work, they had fulfilled their dreams and created something of precious marvel and beauty. It was the most marvellous article of loveliness that the world had ever adored. And the bringers of success left the town of Arturia Customer Support to follow the Elves to their new and wonderfully pleasurable land of honesty and goodwill.

The sleepy old town of Arturia Customer Support awoke, the town awoke not to the sunshine and green-golden fields of success, no here was another land, a different land. A land filled with putrid smells and desert sands. The town of Arturia Customer Support saw no one, heard no one, they had all gone, they who had brought the success, had taken it away again.

And the moral of the story? There is no moral in an immoral world.

Response

Then finally on the 24.11.2022 I got a response from Arturia Support:

We’re currently working with less staff than usual so we might take longer to treat your case.

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused during this period.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

I was surprised that they had read my forum post explaining I was fine with waiting provided I knew why I was waiting. They had taken my suggestion to heart.

Then 02.12.2022 finally:

So please, since your product is still within its guarantee period, we kindly ask you to contact your supplier directly in order to process a replacement / repair of the unit depending on their guarantee policy.

Now, I understand this is not the reply you were expecting after all the time you waited for us to get back to you. So, if you do not want to contact your reseller/distributor and would like us to replace your unit directly, we will exceptionally do so.

I explained to them that I had no reseller and that I used two different names: one to purchase the controller and one to register the controller. If they liked, they could send it to the “reseller” and I would receive the controller since it was me.

08.12.2022

Arturia support sent me UPS shipment labels to send my broken unit in. Obviously the prospect of sending them the controller that I am using and then having to wait for months for a return, did not fill me with joy. So I replied that I would prefer that they send me a replacement and I would send back the broken unit using the packaging of the new controller.

09.12.2022

Arturia support replies saying that yes, they would send me a replacement unit since I had been through so much hassle but I should know that it is not Arturia standard procedure. They would send me a tracking number as soon as they sent out the replacement.

Yippee, I thought, Arturia will finally send me a replacement! They had all details and their support explicitly wrote that they would send me a tracking number when they sent out the new controller. They did not request any further information and I assumed, finally all was good.

Then ten days later on the 19.12.2022:

Your support request number (8xxxxxx5) is now pending for 10 days.

We yet received no news from your side, and may need your feedback to resolve your request.

Can you please get back to us as soon as you can?

/!\ After 20 days pending, your case will be considered as solved and automatically closed.

I wrote back that I was lost as to what they would needed from me and that I thought that they would send me a replacement controller.

Since then, I have not heard anything else from them.

Conclusion

Finally this Kafkaesque roll-coaster comes to an end. I don’t know what I need to send them and they don’t have to worry about sending me a new controller. How can I respond if I don’t know what it is they want? And how can they send me a new controller when they need something from me that I haven’t provided to them but that they don’t know what it is? Exquisitely Kafkaesque!

The support saga will end in ten days and from Arturias’ point of view, yet another successful customer support ticket can be closed.

All that remains is to await the obligatory customer support satisfaction link (“it only takes five minutes to fill out”). Yet another method companies use to ground their support teams into submission.

Merry Xmas Arturia.

It is sad to think of and harder to prevent, however suicide will be the next logical (but stupid) step in the battle between climate activists and climate changers.

With the slogan deleting myself from the climate imbalance one would be performing the ultimate altruist act. Removing oneself from a population that is changing the climate would be one small symbolic step (considering a population of eight billion) but an extreme act of civil disobedience and the ultimate personal sacrifice for the greater good.

Observing the trends amongst climate activist, it is clear that their actions are getting extremer each passing day. From gluing themselves to streets and blocking rescue vehicles (unintentionally) to gluing themselves to works of art across galleries around the global. Frustrations amongst activists must be comparably extreme.

Those frustrations grow out of the unchanging status-quo of a situation that has been with us for over fifty years. Even worse, few realise that climate change studies have been with us since the late 19th century. We have known for longer than we like to believe that our actions have been negatively affecting our environment, our life-support system.

It is unfortunate that the worlds media, instead of addressing the causes of those extreme acts prefer to discuss the symptoms - the damage caused to objects, the disruption to societal order, the number of arrests, the imprisonments. And if that doesn’t sway public opinion against the activists, then oppressive draconian rhetoric comparing climate activists to terrorists is pulled out of the hat.

Our worlds political class pays lip service to the topic. One example is Rishi Sunak (the at-the-time-of-writing prime minister of the UK) highlights this lip service by first refusing to go to the COP27 climate conference and then under public pressure, he does a backflip. That is well and good, however he could have said that he would attend but online - that is, he does not fly to Egypt, instead keep the carbon dioxide in the ground, and attends only online, using a technology fine-tuned during the Covid pandemic.

It is ironic and sad to have a climate conference occurring in-person instead of online. As an additional bonus if it were an online-only conference, we - as global citizens - could have all attended instead of merely the selected few.

I as an observer find it disappointing and dystopian to wake in the morning to news of war, destruction and pandemic only then to read of global leaders flying halfway around the world to attend a climate conference sponsored by Coca-Cola.

Postscriptum

The hidden truth of climate change is perhaps that it is already irreversible being a combination of man-made actions and Natures complex misunderstood rebalancing strategies. Undoubtedly Nature acts partly as a magnifying glass for human stupidity.

Scientists potentially know this and since they know it, the political class potentially knows. Which then means that the political class is acting, as they mostly do, in their own best interests (whereby the scientist had hoped they would act in the interest of the greater good).

We tend to forget that we are also part of Nature (no matter how often we attempt to demonstrate that we are not). And it is clear that Nature will survive any climate change, Nature is the great survivor in this mess. As Nature survives, we humans will adapt and continue on - as a species, conceivably not in a larger societally form.

Therefore potentially another hidden truth is that, similar to the Y2K bug, nothing much will happen - to 80% of the humans on the planet. Doubtless the biggest secret behind the climate change is that most people alive will continue to be alive - 80% being higher than 49%.

The irony is that what we should not be excessively scared of nature or climate change, but the destructive forces of our fellow humans as fear grows that they are on the wrong side of balance sheet - i.e. they face or belief they face certain death. The battles over precious resources will cause far more deaths and destruction than the climate change or the naturally occurring changes.

But who knows. Doubtless this a whole lot of hogwash and speculation but it remains my personal belief system much as religions are belief systems.

Ingredients:

   - latex one-way could be an option

   - red tone is closer to the truth
1 Part Wall
   - any wall that can be legally decorated

Instructions:

Step 1: Pull on the rubber glove, ensuring that it is not the same hand that will hold the spray can! Although having gloves on both hands is another possible option :)

Step 2: Place the gloved hand onto the wall, holding the wall. Spread the fingers apart on that hand.

Step 3: Engage spray can aiming at the hand holding the wall.

Step 4: Take off the glove and dispose of it responsibly.

Step 5: Rinse and Repeat as often as possible.

Result:

You are now looking at one of the initial form of art that humans created. The first cave-dwelling humans decorated their cave walls with the same motive.

Reflect a moment on how far we humans have come and yet how primitive we remain. Reflect on the disconnect between us and those caves. Reflect on technology and how our primitive brains deal with the advances we have made in our tooling.

Instead of mixing orca tones that can be found naturally in our surroundings, we take a spray can created in a factory halfway around the world. Using the spray can releases deadly gases that destroy our habitat. And since the colour does not rinse off, we need a glove.

That we collectively call technological advancement.

Izzy Wisher describes it beautifully in an Aeon Magazine article Cave art:

The ‘Panel of Hands’ best characterises this within El Castillo. The implicit presence of generations of hands that were placed on the cave wall are captured and preserved in a red ochre pigment, which was blown from the mouths of our distant ancestors. These hand-stencils tangibly connect us to Upper Palaeolithic people; we can reach out across the ages and almost touch our hands with theirs. This probably evoked a similar sense of connection in the Upper Palaeolithic. The hand-stencils within the cave are old, dating to at least 37,000 years ago.

We gain: connection to our ancestor, a connection that made us what we are today; a reflection on what it means to be humans that have been honoured with existence through survival; and finally a warning from our ancestor do not be the last generation to enjoy that existence.

I’m neither left nor right, I do not believe in Capitalism nor in Communism. I question Neo-Liberalism, as I question Socialism. I believe in a system based on love and altruism, one that has its foundation in respect of others and openness for the new and unknown. This system has no name as we have never experienced it.

I don’t believe in a God nor in many Gods. I believe that our responsibilities lie with us and not with a myth that allows us to blame others for our problems and failings. Responsibility lies with us and not them.

A system that puts profits aside for morals, a system where we are not products that sell themselves to the highest bidder. Were success is not measured by the size of bank accounts, were success is not being better then thou neighbour. Were success lies in the altruist actions for our neighbours.

A system where patents and copyright do not hinder progress, a system where copying is a sign of respect for the individual and a betterment for the whole society. Knowledge is a social good and freed of profiteering.

A global society liberated from passports and borders, a society where freedom means freedom of travel and strangers are friends, where friends become family and family is global.

A society freed of the feelings of inferiority complexes where my neighbour is my friend. A society where equality means nothing as we no longer have differences, instead meaningful open and honest conservations finding the best solutions for all.

Simplicity triumphs over complexity, complexity that makes us all feel dumb to keep us in the shadows. In the shadows of them and us, them who understand and us who are made to feel that we cannot know. Reducing our voices to whispers in the wind.

Thankfully I am not the only one to believe. Thankfully we can all believe in this, even if its a notion that is hard to imagine. Take strength in the knowledge that others alike believe it is possible.

In the purity of openness we will find our way.

Postscriptum

If you believe this is utopian or undoable, then you might have a stake in keeping the system as it is. Or you might have a fear of change, change can improve alike it can ruin. Or you might not be able to imagine a different system because your cultural upbringing does not allow imagining a peaceful future.

Then you must know that history is a collection of changes, a collection of different approaches to living together on this planet. That we are here does not mean we did everything properly or there are no improvements that we may make.

It is in the narrowness of thought wherein doom lies. Broad knowledge and openness for the new is how humankind has survived. A belief that technology will save us has always been with us.

Approximately two-thousand years ago a new technology come onto the world stage: Christianity. A revolutionary new technology that changed an entire planet. Humans are technology, thoughts are technology, Nature is technology. Computers are a natural continuation of that long line of technologies.

Potentially Humanity did begin with the first tool (or technology if you prefer): a bone to hit the other tribes leader over the head to get at resources that your tribe needed. This was postulated in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is sad to think that we have come no further in our use of technology than to kill each other, to enslave each other and to keep knowledge from each other.

It is the narrowing of technology to electric devices or manmade objects that limits us. Technology is far broader and richer than electrical devices or computers or artificial intelligence. Technology includes thoughts and reflection, ideas and openness, love and respect.

It is our fears of lions that we project into the universe. But we have long lost that fear of lions since now lions are stuck behind bars in zoos, there are no more lions to jump out and maul us. Yet we maintain our fear. Is it time to let go of those fears that haunt us?

Instead we continue to assume that the universe is hostile and out to get us. We even go as far as developing theories that the silence is a sign of aggression - see the The Three Body Problem. The theory suggests that the silence is everyone keeping their heads down because as soon as you make a sound, someone will come along and maul you. Sssshhhhh, the lions might hear us!

The ironic paradox is that the universe is a loud place. Communication is going on constantly. There are constant communication amongst species, aliens and bug-eyed monsters. How can I say this? Simple, if we don’t hear anything it does not mean there is no communication. Again this is a human assumption projected into the universe: on this planet if we don’t hear anything, then there is silence.

We are the “smartest” animals on the planet, we hear nothing, therefore it must be silence. QED.

From the flat earth to the earth revolving around sun, our assumptions have, time after time, been proven wrong yet we persist in making assumptions concerning concepts and realities that we have no deeper understanding of. Which is what makes us humans: we make assumptions and create theories to explain our collective reality. Fundamentally a good survival strategy. Unfortunately, these theories sometimes blend us from taking other approaches. The Christian Church enforced a blind spot on society when it said the sun rotates around the earth. No one dared to question the church, hence a unproven theory became a collective truth.

Taking the assumption that the universe is a loud place, how come we don’t hear anything? Simple: we listen in ways that are not compatible to the communication methods. We are using listening methods, here come our assumptions again, in which we assume everyone else out there would communicate. But what if they communicate in a utterly different way? Well the result would be the same: the universe would appear to be silent.

And there we have it: the premise the universe is silent can be concluded from either “yes we listen, we hear nothing therefore it’s silent” or “we listen in ways in which there are no communication and therefore it would appear to be silent simple because we do not listen properly”. We cannot prove it either way, we end up assuming that no universal creature/alien/monster is communicating.

Supposing the latter conclusion is correct - that we are not using the correct listening methods - then how should we be listening? I don’t know. Instead we might be better off asking how does everyone else out there communicate? Might they communicate in particular way that we well never infer unless we make societal changes? Thereby taking a complete alternate approach to listening.

And this is the core of what I would like to say: we humans are a competitive and destructive race. We have collectively brought many species to extinction or close to, we have destroyed much of the environment and we now face a catastrophic climate change. We continue to live in terms of “us and them”: nature is ours to control, aliens are out to get us, and those who suffer have themselves to blame.

What if the universe is a place where after millions of years of evolution, species have come to realise that instead of one-against-all, it is better to be all-for-one. It is better to be altruist and share instead of hoarding and fighting over resources and knowledge. What if the these aliens have come up with a communication mechanism that can solely be understood by fellow altruist motivate species? Communication methods that can exclusively be understood by species with whom those aliens wish to communicate?

Yes that is right: a communication method that, to be understood, requires a societal form that consists of altruism, peace, harmony and respect.

Many might say this is ridiculous and well it may be. It is as ridiculous as believing that a societal form that is based on altruism could ever work, provided one excludes Buddhism.

Societal Blindspots

The deeper meaning of this article is to point out that societies, be it East, West, North or South, have societal blindspots, ideas that cannot be thought of because of those societal taboo topics. A society refrains from talking about, thinking about these taboos and instead make assumptions to avoid those topics.

Having societal taboo topics implies that each society has a glass-ceiling beyond which it won’t be able to go, be this a technological, spiritual, societal or humanistic ceiling.

Confrontation of those taboo topics provides societies with the ability to move ahead as confrontation of taboos can open doors that many or many not be entered, but the doors are opened. Sharing ideas can lead to taboo topics being viewed from different perspectives or contexts, untabooing them, i.e., less fear of the lion. Hence we are all better off sharing ideas and working together than hoarding ideas and fighting against each other.

If taboos are swept away or we begin sharing ideas and pooling our global knowledge potentially we might begin communicating with those aliens that might be inquisitive and interested in sharing knowledge and not eating us for lunch.

Postscriptum

Adam Curtis takes about Societal Blindspots in terms of narrow societal accepts of new ideas. He presents an interesting idea that “Brainwashing” was an invention to discredit people with other ideas, thereby narrowing the spectrum of allowed ideas.

I attempt to say the same but in terms of taboo topics that society skirts around. Or via Christian myths or by being told someone is bad.

There is a lot of narrowing happening in society since a narrow minded society is simpler to control. If cattle were educated, you won’t be able to slaughter them en masse.

The sentiment “blabla is bad” is a self-fulfilling justification for everything that happens after it. Because blabla is bad other bad things will happen but they are ok because blabla is bad. In fact we have to do bad things because blabla forced us to do it, after all blabla is bad. Even things that we ourselves once said where bad now become good because blabla is bad.

Questioning the statement “blabla is bad” would be saying “wait is blabla bad”? Who told us that blabla is bad? Have we meant blabla and formed a direct opinion? Can we ever consider blabla to be good again? What would blabla need to do so that we think blabla is good again? Why was blabla once good and now suddenly bad? What exactly did blabla do to become bad?

This leads to the uncomfortable truth that we personally don’t know whether blabla is bad or not, we have been told from other people whom we assume are telling us the truth when they say blabla is bad. In fact these other people must be telling us the truth otherwise they themselves would be bad. They then would become the self-fulling justification of our own bad behaviour, i.e. our own bad behaviour by lying to our own people saying blabla is bad (when fact blabla is good) would then be the justification for our bad (well now good actions but previously bad actions) actions against blabla.

It is literally no longer possible for blabla to reform, reclaim or reestablish the sentiment we had before: blabla is good. We don’t provide a route back to the blabla is good sentiment. Because blabla is bad is being told to us and we don’t decide ourselves. So even if blabla does become good, those telling us he is bad, keep telling us that he is bad and we keep believing the hype.

Therefore blabla will always remain bad. Blabla isn’t the given the opportunity to change for the good because we don’t want that. Because then our narrative falls apart. The basis for the entire narrative is blabla is bad, without that we might be questioned about our actions, and it might turn out that our actions aren’t really good … they are actually bad …. but that’s ok because, thankfully, blabla is still bad.

So the next time someone says blabla is bad, just say blabla is still bad. It adds the possibility that blabla might change or that we might actually know what blabla is really like. It is a form of character assassination to say blabla is bad.

Weirdly what is not being said who is good? Blabla is bad would imply that there is a scalar on which at the far end is blabla but who is at the other end? As soon as someone is bad, there is a comparison to someone else. Who is this person of mystery, who is it that is soooo good that blabla is bad?

Appeasement won’t work with blabla because blabla is bad and unreformable, blabla will never change because blabla is bad. Even if we find a peace with blabla, because blabla is bad, blabla will break that peace and continue being bad.

blabla is bad as long we don’t allow blabla to become good again. We have the key in our hands, not blabla.

This argument reminds us of Orwells 1984 - the constant need for an enemy made suppression simple and easy. Because we’re at war, we need to live badly, and we are at war because Eurasia is bad, making us good.

The slow and painful death of consumerism and globalised manufacturing is leading to the new era of collateral ballast.

The failure of capitalism has left an entire class of consumers out in the cold. Consumers who can no longer consumer as there is no more credit, no more jobs and no more money.

Money has been drained out of the system, never to flow back down to the working classes aka consumers. Blood of the system, money, has been hoovered up and frozen into large powerful banks, controlled by the rich. And when blood stops following the result is the death of the host.

When money is controlled not by the state but by the rich and powerful, where does the desire come to support the poor and less well-off? From nowhere, there is no desire for the rich to support the poor. The rich don’t need the poor. Although one could argue that if there are no poor, who is rich? Rich are rich comparing themselves to the poor - it’s the comparison that makes the rich, rich.

Money stagnates, capitalism freezes.

This unfortunate happenstance was never planned nor desired, the true believers in capitalism believed in an indefinitely continuation. Who would have thought that in a few generations (one or two, is it even a plural?) capitalism would collapse and the world would be facing a crisis of ballast?

It is unpleasant to think of people as ballast but economically that is what is it is. Economically speaking humans are cattle. To be herded together and made to plough the fields. And the system now has too many cattle for too few fields. Human labour has been optimised and replaced by machines however human nature is one of inefficiencies. We don’t have too few resources, we have too much waste. Humans, as a species, are incredibly inefficient. We eat to shit half of that out again. We drink to urinate half of that out again.

Its all wasted down drains. Why is this? Because humans weren’t designed to live as we do. In cities, as sedentary individuals in cold rooms in multi-story high-rise buildings. Humans were designed to live in small communities as hunter-gatherers. In that setting, our human inefficiencies were perfectly integrated into the larger environment. By diverting our waste away from the natural environment, we have created a net-negative system: we take from the environment but don’t give back the waste (where it is needed).

In addition, what has happened is that we have designed our inefficiencies into the products we make and into the manufacturing methods we use to make these products. Why do cars stand around rusting for 80 to 90 percent of their lifetime? Why does everyone need a washing machine that is used once or twice a week for a few hours? How much food does a typical restaurant throw out? Expiration dates of foods that remain eatable but because a date has come, the food needs to be thrown out. Mobile phones that get replaced not because the hardware is broken or not capable of doing the job but because inefficiencies of software causes the mobile phone to become redundant - artificially.

The list is endless. In combination with the expectation of everyone of us to have everything we ever desired, we multiple human inbuilt inefficiencies to the point of system collapse - both environmentally and financially.

And why do we have these desires to be better? Do we need to be better than our neighbours - better shoes, better cloths, better lifestyle, better cars, better “betters”? Our neighbours who are our fellow astronauts on Spaceship Earth? Why do we have this continual need for better “betters”? Why does advertising tells us that we need brand X to have feature Y that your neighbour doesn’t have? Or product A will make you a happier person? Why do we care?

Advertising, the cattle probe of capitalism. We believe advertising provides advice on new products, instead advertising has become an instrument for industrial manipulation of the consumer class, creating fake desires and needs. Advertising uses negative human emotions - jealousy, envy, self-doubt, lust, greed, … - to drain financial freedoms from the consumer class who end up trapped in a rat-race to the bottom. Consumers who are confined in a financial cage of debt (call it a credit line if you like), worry, stress and work. Endlessly looping inside the hamster wheel, the hamster wheel which from the inside, appears as the career ladder that everyone seeks to climb.

We are the cattle being lead to our own slaughter by advertising. We are no longer consumers, we are becoming the cattle class. We have lost out financial freewill for the sack of having the latest and greatest mobile phone. Does it get anymore Orwellian than having an advertising industry track you in order to create an artificial desire in your mind to purchase something that you will not need or already have?

Why collateral? The ruling class that are blind to the collapse of capitalism but smart enough to drain it of the resources that we all need, take the creation of ballast into account and then apply Darwinian principles of survival of the fittest. Fittest here being economically and market fittest, the ballast becomes anonymous numbers in a spreadsheet somewhere. This is not inventive nor modern, there were and will always be slaves in a system based on profits, as the highest profits come from free labour.

Even the words “collateral” and “ballast” are related to waste: collateral damage the unfortunate death of humans - wasting of human lives. And ballast is pointless crap that a boat needs so that it is not empty on a return trip.

Governmental Narrative: No Money for Society.

We could not imagine a collapse happening but now that it has happened, we can’t do anything because we don’t have the financial resources to turn it around.

This simple governmental narrative is repeated year after year, across all facades of human existence. Climate change, education, health care, social support, housing, leisure. Everywhere aspect of human existence that has to do with helping people and not making a profit, the narrative is: we have no money. If you happen to be a bank or the industrial military complex: “we have no money for education but suddenly out of nowhere there is a spare billion or two for purchasing military hardware or saving a bank or two”.

People like Elon Musk believe that we can escape our future by, for example, colonising Mars. But wait? Who caused all the problems we are facing here? Could it be the same human species that is planning to colonies Mars? Hm, what could possible go wrong? The alternative is to build bunkers under deserts.

The working class became the consumer class and the consumer class will become collateral ballast on the economically system.

Humans will become economical ballast needing retirement plans, medical care and infrastructure for fornication, ingestion and excrement. All these things require investment and upkeep for humans who no longer possess the financial ability to consumer.

Working Class

These are trends in “Western” society - a working class remains however with automation and out-sourcing, it is shrinking. And the working class is not disappearing globally, western workers are being automated away or out sourced to locations where wages are the cheapest.

It is this trend, in part, that made China rich - cheap labour, no environmental regulation and no labour protection laws. On the other hand, it was this trend triggered by China having cheap labour? No, it’s always been this way and will always stay that way: in world where profit is the only measure of success, production will go there where labour is the financially cheapest. The natural consequence of this are slaves.

Capitalism brought us slaves and the politic class (grudgingly) banned them. Capitalism is a winner-take-all game which needs regulation from the outside, it is not self regulating. But what happens if the regulatory institutions - i.e. politic, media, legal system - are in the hands of the capitalist? Politics will never be in the hands of the capitalist, but lobbied to take a certain positions. Large capitalist media groups own the opinion generating media outlets, democracy does not work since the voters opinions are manipulated? And the legal system has long given up apply the laws evenly.

The rich have taken more out of the system and have not given back an equivalent amount. The difference between taking-from and giving-back is profit and wealth. It is obvious that the rich should give wealth back to the other players. It is comparable to playing monopoly but at the end of the game, the person with the most money would get to keep it. A new game would thus begin with less money to go around and the wealthy with a head start.

But we’re not playing multiple games of monopoly, there is one, there is no reset. War plans its role as a societal reset however it does not reset everything.

Are there alternative approaches?

Is there a system better than capitalism? There isn’t a better system since we are blind to change. We believe the system is the way it is and it is too complex to change because politicians are smart people, they are the only ones that understand it.

A better system won’t replace capitalism, however capitalism needs better regulation, improved (mandatory?) incentives for the rich to make non-profitable investments and a first rate educational system that is open, free and required to teach students free-thinking and judgement building based on non-biased and multi-polar argumentation and discussion.

Our system does not need replacement, it needs a refactoring - a clean up, a recalibration to support the majority, a humanisation of the system.

Refactoring is always done with small steps, example changes that might make a difference:

1. proven empathy for the future

May be we should have politicians with proven empathy. People who have worked in jobs where they were directly caring-for and helping other people should be the ones who become politicians? Based on the notion that people who have in the past helped others will provide better help for others in the future. Instead of the current batch of politicians that never helped anyone in the past but now claim they will help others in the future.

And directly since manager-types from retirement homes should not be allowed to become politicians, instead someone who listened to peoples pains, helped to relief those pains and who gave up their time for others - directly helping others.

In additionally, politicians must be parents. Since besides sleepless nights and wet nappies, what has the future generation ever done for me? To give politicians direct feedback from that future, they must have children. This would mean forcing them to lie to their own children when they say “I’m doing my best for your future and the environment”.

2. incentives for non-profitable investments

Normally the state pays for roads and infrastructure that we all use. The state maintains parks and forests for us all to enjoy. The state pays for free education - to varying levels - for all to enjoy an education. The state pays for everything that is the common good, that which is unprofitable as an investment.

Low corporate tax rates have shrunk the money available for the state to pay for this common good. The money is locked away in the vaults of the ultra, mega rich. The common good has become the common mess as the state sells the last bits of profitable common-good to corporations.

This is the hardest problem to deal without become a card-carrying lefty. Should the state become a bank robber? Introducing negative interest so that banks make more profit and the rest of us watch our saving dwindle away, while the rich purchase more paintings to hideaway in free-ports? Should the state tax the rich who regularly invite these same politicians to sex parties (looking at you Bill Clinton and your association with Epstein)? Should the state print money and pretend that inflation does not exist and will never happen?

Nah, fc*k that si*t. How about a new approach.

How about we create a new currency that is not pegged to any other currency. This currency becomes legal tender in an entire region that is self-sufficient, a region for example the size of Europe. As there is no official exchange rate between this new currency and any other, there aren’t any external influences from other regions that might want to meddle. And as long as everyone agrees that a piece of colourful paper with the number “50” written on it has the equivalent value of a loaf of bread, then the system would work fine.

The last time this happened was Bitcoin - that’s how easy it is. A new currency can be created between two people who agree on a nominal payment system, global currency markets have extended this agreement to more people.

As an extra special bonus, external large multi-national corporation must invest their profits into non-profitable state projects. As profits represents the difference between taking out of a system and putting into that system, it appears to be fair to have corporation invest into unprofitable socially positive projects. Since this region is self-sufficient, there is no interest - from the perspective of the region - to have a multi-national corporations come in. Please note: as soon as a state or region is depended on corporations and their products, the corporation can act as a bully on a playground.

3. free education

Corporations are taxed and made to pay directly to educational institutions on the number of degrees their employees possess. And the longer a degree took to obtain, for example lawyer degrees, the more a corporation would pay. This would not be a one-off payment: for the length of the employees employment, the corporation pays.

The monies thus generated would be divided up amongst institutions weighted not on where the degrees were obtained - that would be endowments - instead by the number of poor students each university/school has taken on.

It would be a positive discrimination towards students who are financially not well off and the institution that took them onboard. Over time, these institutions would improve the quality of their education, improving the educational level of those financially not-well-off students. Thus lifting those students out of their status as not-well-off financially since they would obtain better paying jobs.

As those original institutions benefit, their piece of the cake would naturally reduce and other institutions as these have more poor students and thus would be positively discriminated towards.

4. dismiss undismissability

Civil servants, public officials and bureaucrats have, in certain places, jobs for life or are dismissible with great difficulty. The original intention behind this was to allow civil servants to uncover corruption and whistleblow corruption and misbehaviour within the civil servantry or/and in society as whole.

Unfortunately, as with all good intentions, it has failed miserably. Instead whistleblowers have been crucified by public officials and law enforcement. Public officials are corrupt knowing they can’t be dismissed, they are lazy because they can’t be dismissed. Here are people who play role-models for society acting as if there is no tomorrow and all the money in the world isn’t enough for them. These same public officials that then complain about society is corrupt, ordinary citizens ripping off the state. If their role-models do it, why not society as a whole?

How about removing this idea of undismissibility and making public official responsible for their actions? It would be something simple to apply, one piece of legislation. A second piece of legislation could increase the punishment for any public official who is caught with their pants down and purses open. Because of their role-model function within society, their punishment should be double or quadruple of that of an ordinary citizen, for the same crime.

Now one might wonder, why not? Two easy pieces of legislation for something that should never need to be used since all public official are incorruptible and always above-board. Amazing, Crazy, Mind-blowing! Why don’t we have this legislation? Well who makes the rules here? And who is responsible for implementing those rules? Those people this legislation would affect! A case of conflict of interest.

But our public officials are incorrupt therefore we do not need legislation punishing corruption. With this argument we can then implement the legislation since no public official would be affected, it is an argument for implementation!

5. drug tests for drug regulators

Athletes that participant in competitive sport have to undergo regular drug tests to ensure a fair competition. In certain countries, bus drivers or train drivers need to undergo drug tests to ensure their ability to drive safely and ensure the safety of passengers.

Yet politicians are not tested for drugs even though their role is to lead us safely and harmoniously into a better future.

The aim is not to legalise drugs en masse, instead it is to hold those who regulate us to the standards they require from us. And since they force certain sections of society to be tested (athletes, bus drivers), why should they not be tested? Above all since they fulfil a role-model function within society - as do athletes and hence they need regular drug tests.

6. do not vote

Voting continues to be seen as legitimising element within a democratic system. But what all candidates are either bad, worse or corrupt? What is the best thing to do? Just do not go voting at election time.

Simple ideas for insurmountable problems?

Humans cannot accept simple solutions to things that appear complex. The assumption is that if humans can’t understand it, then it must be complex, overlooking the simplest solutions that surprisingly work.

There are now three suggestions how one could change capitalism to make it more balanced out.

Strange how we have never speak of upgrading capitalism but daily my phone wants me to install a new version of those apps that I do not use but I once installed. Why not the same with our political and financially systems?

One more suggestion: can someone please bring out an app called “Capitalism” so that my phone would display the message “Capitalism needs upgrading, please install the latest version of Capitalism” or “Capitalism no longer supports your operating system version, please upgrade”.

Strangely Capitalism should be compatible with all operating systems, past, present and future and no we should not need to adapt ourselves, it should adapt to us.

Hang on, that won’t work

For all those who dismiss these ideas with the statement “that cannot work”, could you please give me the lottery numbers for next week? You are making a statement concerning an unbeknownst future. All change is doubted until it succeeds and became the norm.

However, no change is possible as long as there are bribable leaders (or decision makers or kings or politicians), there is no point in changing anything. Step one would be to replace the ego-driven ruling class, with an empathic-base ruling class.

Humans have the ability to be empathic and altruist but fear, uncertain and doubt (not to mention greed, jealously, hate, …) are more powerful and manipulative emotions in times of uncertainty.

In times of plenty, love and harmony can take a hold and we have the summer of love and the hippy movement of the 1960s. Or the Renaissance. Or the French Revolution.

Behind every good company there are good people, behind bad companies there are good people. What makes a company bad?

The above made me reflect on companies that can do everything without ever being made personally accountable for anything. Companies might get sued but rarely does anyone go to jail. An individual, on the other hand, will be sued and made accountable for their actions. If they can’t pay or have committed a criminal action, they go to jail.

The privilege of the company construct is given to the few who have nothing to say, the many shall remain silent and follow.

I was thinking about street artists, artists and people with conscience^* who, in bring their message to the world, are forced to remain anonymous for fear of being sued or being charged with criminal offences.

^* = Collectively known as artists for the purposes of this text.

Companies can continue doing their evilness and nothing happens because they are a company construct. I am thinking of weapon manufacturers, banks, consultancies, social network companies and the rest that bring society no benefit whatsoever but continue pushing their destructive products and messages onto the society. Suing them ends up changing nothing or, at best, results in insignificant monetary fines but absolutely no personal accountability.

Companies also have no need to act anonymously they can build trust with other companies and combine their forces to produce even more of what we do not need. Artists have a harder time joining forces since trust can only be obtained through criminal acts.

Artists who try to spotlight societal failings need to rebel and perform illegal acts (for example, the vandalisation of advertising is an offence in many countries) and thus they need to remain anonymous. This brings with it a feeling of mistrust, isolation and perhaps even paranoia. Artists end up trusting only their very close friends. The only way to gain trust is through crime, making the whole situation even worse. Compare this with the operation of large criminal organisations.

Protect the artist: Artists Inc. Ltd.

What society requires is a company construct for artists. Company construct being a legal construct that protects the artists against personal attack and personal financial loss. Just as real companies protect those in charge (who ironically enjoy anonymity) and those performing illegal actions in the name of the company.

Now if an artist collective were to setup a company to protect them against fines and criminal charges, how would their actions be defined as being performed in the name of the company? How do real companies do this? By having 9to5 working hours? Or by enslaving employees to the company by paying salaries? Or by having a boss who told them do something thereby removing their own personal moral responsibility while performing their tasks?

Probably the simplest thing would be to pay the artist for their time in creating their work, not as a commission but as a salary job. This makes the artist a salaried employee and not an independent entity delivering works of art to a company.

If a company would pay, say a symbolic salary of 1 Euro/Dollar/Pound/Yen/Colourful-Paper per month to an artist for them to bring the company message to various walls, then the wall owners could not sue the artist, since they were working as an employee and were told to do it. So the wall owners would have to sue the company who was paying their artists employees at the time. (Note: the company message would originate from its employees of course.)

As for criminal charges: If an employee is caught performing an illegal act (say climbing a railway yard fence), they would of course first resign their position within the company, say they were profusely sorry and then the lawyers would start arguing. Eventually everyone forgets what actually happened, our spaceship Earth continues its journey through the universal darkness and done. No one needs to spend time in prison since no one can remember what they were actually arguing about.

Another nice feature would be that this artistic company could incorporate in some tax haven, meaning it is even harder to sue them. With all the letterbox companies, you do not know which company employed whom at said moment when the crime was committed. So perhaps each artwork actually becomes a new shell/holding/letterbox company. (As an aside: This is exactly what movie production companies do: each movie is another holding company with limited liabilities, if the movie fails or budget runs out or whatever, sue the holding company to obtain your lost funds but not the large powerful rich parent company.)

Of course some would say that creating a company that exclusively protects artist in their “illegal” activities might not be a company at all. Well, one could simply declare the company as an “artistic endeavour for universal societal good”. Any employee caught performing illegal activities is of course a “rogue employee”, a “black sheep” and how could they possible perform such an action: We, as an artistic endeavour for the universal societal good company, in no way condone their actions the press release would read. Sounds familiar? We are not talking about a bank or consultancy or even the political class, who are morally upstanding entities, we are talking about the illegal activities of artists of conscience.

Alternatively, we could level the playing field for everyone by removing the company construct altogether and start making individuals who perform morally and legally questionable actions in the name of their company responsible for their actions. I only added this to point out that there are no alternatives.

Art becomes products and artists become employees. Is that the future of non-conformal societal comment?

Here’s a joke:

Two alcoholics go into a bar and sit down. They both order their drinks.

Says the one alcoholic to the other: You are an alcoholic.

Says the other alcoholic: No.

That might not have been a particular good joke but at least it got your attention. The philosophical question is which alcoholic is correct?

The first or second or are both right or both wrong? Perhaps that narrator is wrong and neither are actually alcoholics?

And who is exactly does the first alcoholic think they are in accusing the other of being an alcoholic? Perhaps that alcoholic would have told the joke as: an alcoholic and a church-going, god-fearing believer in Christianity go into a bar together.

Or perhaps the first alcoholic would have told the joke as: a successful but worried capitalist and a struggling but happy artist walk into a bar together.

So the next time you have the feeling you have to judge someone, ask yourself who is doing the judging? You or the society around you? Or your belief-system? Or your own personal fears?

This is important since the person you are judging will always just see you doing the judgement, they do not understand your source of that judgement. They will always blame you for your judgement, not your fears, beliefs, society, family or green aliens from the outer-sphere that you saw on your lawn last night.

Take a stand and try accepting and understanding instead of judging.

Postscriptum

Ironically of course some people would think that I am judging them. I am not.

I am pointing out that if you judge someone then beware that the other person does not know why you have made that judgement and will therefore blame you for that judgement (judgement is always being bad, else it would be called praise).

You might have very good reasons to be worried about someone, however if you don’t explain your reasoning to them, they will just blame you.

Compare this to the difference if you tell your children “no don’t do that” or “no don’t do that because you might cut the head of your brother off” - the former does not provide an explanation why an action might be bad/dangerous, while the latter gives a clear statement of that danger.

Note also that the children involved might have a different perspective on the danger, after all, it is the projection of the danger that you suspect might happen that is audibly transported to your children.

Perhaps moments later you will have a headless child.

Postscriptum 2

Fools judge, the wise guide.

Guiding someone is different to judging them, sometimes it is better to be a wiser fool.

Here’s a joke:

Father Xmas and God were sitting around having a conversation. They were discussing camels and whether squeezing them through eyes of needles would respect their fundamental rights, when God began:

God: You know Daddy X, I don’t understand how you did it but I really respect you for it!

Daddy X: Whatcha mean?

God: That no one believes in you! Show me anyone older than ten who still believes there is a Father Xmas? How did you do it?

Daddy X: Hm. Perhaps it is that I bring them presents once a year and after a while those presents begin to suck, you know socks and ties and shit. And all the good expensive stuff that their wish for, regardless of how nice anyone was, I never bring with me.

God: Nah, can’t be that, I gave them all life and that, apparently, also sucks.

Daddy X: Perhaps it is my outfit which does have nuances of being a sexual pervert and all those children sitting on my lap. I assume parents realise that they don’t want their children sitting on the laps of old men with long white beards.

God: Nah, can’t be that, look at the priesthood.

Daddy X: Hm, perhaps it’s because I live at the North Pole? I mean every kid can figure out that it’s damn cold and that no one could survive there.

God: Ah ok, and here I am suspended above their heads in a place called heaven where everything is allowed, a real paradise. They all want to come up here! Oh ok, so instead of enjoying their lives now, they believe that when they die, they will grow wings and come up here.

Daddy X: If God wanted us to fly, he would have given us wings.

God: I need to make an amendment to the bible: “And on the seventh day God rested his tired hands and spoke thus: Life nor death have wings included”.

Daddy X: That reminds me, didn’t the Easter Bunny wanted to come out tonight?

That might not have been a particular good joke but at least it got your attention.

If you have problem with this joke, then stop being judgemental. Each to their own and live and let live. Use your judgemental energy to reflect, in all seriousness, why some beliefs we collectively leave behind with our childhood and others we cherish our entire lives, although none have any basis in truth nor fact.

Beliefs are personal and should be respected, especially since they are powered by faith.

Even if I make a joke about God, it’s not your God, it’s the God that I believe in. It’s the God as I have experienced him throughout my life - from the bible, from stories told to me, from my societal influences around me and yes I allow myself to form my own judgement, based on my personal believes and faith.

Speaking of my believe in the Easter Bunny: imagine a world where we would have wars because one tribe believed in the white Easter Bunny while the other believed in the orange polka doted Easter Bunny.

No one would take this seriously. But wars between Christians and Moslems are ok?

Postscriptum

When I say that this is my personal God and then you might say, hey but that’s not what XXX (where XXX could be the bible, you local priest or television) teaches about God so that can’t be God.

And that’s why it’s my personal God, it’s my faith in my personal God that he would have this conversation with Father Xmas. There is nothing that I have assumed that isn’t true or has not been taught in some way:

• Do children sit on the laps of priests?
• Are some priests sexual perverts?
• Does God live in heaven?
• Does he really want us all up there?
• Did he give us life (which, along with that comes death, so he must have given us that too)?
• Do a lot people say life sucks?

Meaning this joke has a basis in truth. All I have done is pull these truths together in a very particular way.

The Bible is meant to be interpreted and not to be taken as a societal rule book. Each person can interpreted that Bible as they would like and create the God they believe in.

I believe in a God who/which/whom does not desire to be believed in.

Does this make me an atheist? Ironically no since I believe in a God, simply a God that does not believe in themselves or who/which/whom does not desire to be the basis for a believe system with him/her/it at the top of the pyramid.

Postscriptum 2

This would make for a great sci-fi story: imagine Daddy X being the myth that everyone believes in and God would be dumped as Father Xmas is dumped when one gets older.

Supermarkets would become our churches, shopping malls are temples and Father Xmas would be vengeful and spiteful.

Father Xmas would ensure that any competition (as those believers of the cult of the Easter Bunny) would be terrorised and told to stop it. Ideally converting to the Church of Father Xmas and praying to the Power Of Presents (POP).

His elves would become his disciples and one of them would be the bringer of bad presents - the Judas Elf.

Missionaries would be rolling around with shopping carts handing out presents and extolling the greatest of Father Xmas.

Fatherxmasians (as his followers would be called) would look forward to the day where they could join Father Xmas at the North Pole and live in ever-coldness, surrounded by something similar to an Amazon warehouse filled to the rafters with presents. The lucky ones would get an opportunity to work on the shop floor.

The Fatherxmasians would call it “polling” instead of “dying”, as in “I’m heading for the Pole, don’t worry about me!”. Ironically that white light one sees upon death is the natural whiteness of the North Pole!

Hell would a place of ever-warmth, with no presents (i.e. socks and ties are non-existent), coconut cocktails and sunny beaches, all those things that the North Pole does not have. The followers of the Cult of the Easter Bunny would also be hanging around with their cute Easter Bunny noses and fluffy white tails.

Philosophy of Santa Claus.

Meaning: Technology designed to individualise societal interactions but also technology that is designed for individuals.

Take this thought and reflect a moment about the technology that your own. How much of it is designed to help you function within a society and how much of it is designed for you to survive as an individual in a societal context?

Reformulating the question: how much technology do you own that is designed to help you to interact with society in a positive sense? For example, technology that makes sharing with others easier, technology that makes caring for others easier, technology that makes it easier for a family unit to stay together.

Interestingly it is not technology, it is in fact capitalism that reduces societies to individuals - individuals buy more, societies share more.

Technology is just another symptom of the disease.

But before we replace capitalism with just another ism, how about we look into possible reforms to the existing system.

So I was on Insta minding my own business when the following ad popped up into my scrolling experience (if you can even call it an experience, more boredom than anything else):

In english the spam is saying: “thanks to personalised advertising you discover more of the stuff that excites you”.

I just thought: what the f*cking f*ck. Here is this guy with a horse who - hopefully - really enjoys riding, staring - on a wonderful evening - at his phone, smiling because of the advertising he is staring at? Crazy shit.

Honestly look at the scene. Beautiful nature all around him and all he can think is to check out some advertising? The poor horse is getting restless and even looking away from the phone. The horse is actually smarter than the dude.

Holy shit. We living in a world where animals have a greater aversion to advertising than humans. (Side note: adversion is what the horse has got.)

Anyway, personally not being a fan of personalised ads - btw how did Insta not know this? I decided to do something about it. Fuck, what else am I going to do after my Insta experience was so rudely interrupted by spammy crappy ads?

So I warmed up Photoshop (well actually Penpot for me easier for digital adbusting) and made some changes:

So now the ad reads: “Because of personalised ads you discover nothing of that which excites you”.

And KunstAndersZuSein simply means the art of being different.

Feta is a cheese company that likes nature, outdoors, animals and romantic evenings enjoying the beauty of brilliant sunsets.

So now the guy might actually realise how wonderful the current moment is and not what might happen later or on what he might have missed out on.

To Facebook, Meta and Insta I say: f*ck off. Leave me alone with your crappy shitty spammy disgustingly depressing advertising. Stop shitting into my head, I don’t use Zuckerbergs head as a toilet either, right?

I even made a little video out of it (DaVinci Resolve is great for that). Fun fact: Insta won’t let me upload the video - hahaha ROFL, I guess the original ad is copyrighted material.

Kids, do this at home!

So how can you do this at home? And yes this is something you should definitely be doing at home, at work and in bed!

5. Warmed up Penpot and 20mins later I had what I wanted (admittedly I did steal the feta logo). Penpot is open source and therefore you can install locally on a server or your PC.
6. Shared finished product back to phone.
7. Uploaded finished product to Insta.

So how much did it cost? Nothing. All tools are free in the sense of money, not in the sense of freedom.

How much profit? None but loads of laughs from friends and enemies. I made a lot people smile and that is priceless profit for me.

Oh, yer this article took about 30mins to write or so. I think I spent more time sharing this stuff than actually making it.

Come to think of it, Meta probably spent about as much time coming up with the ad, as I did to piss on it.

What I didn’t realise when I originally wrote this article was that the original advertising is advertising for advertising. It is Meta placing an ad that is advertising for Metas advertising.

How does it feel to live in a society that tolerates advertising that promotes advertising?

I also realised later that the ad is actually trying to convince the dude with the horse on a perfect evening, with a brilliant sunset, who has probably completed his ride with his horse that through advertising he will discover an even better experience - playing on the fear of missing out.

Advertising will show him a better life than his current one.

Postscriptum IV

Meta probably spent a lot longer on the ad than I did to bust it. They had to pay for the photo or even make it themselves, paying some photographer thousands of dollars.

Creating a team to come up with a slogan, have some manager sign off on that slogan, then have a retrospective meeting to slap each other on the back feel good about creating destructive, boring, junk which does nothing good for society.

Postscriptum V

Looking at the original image, it does look like a lot of Photoshop. The sunset in the background looks fake, the smile on the guys face looks fake, and even the horse seems to be faking it.

And that made me think: it’s a fake image, with a fake message, in a fake world. Hm, there is some commonality there.

Purchasing lost luggage at airports to unpack on YouTube (german) now seems to have become a thing. Judging by the amount of advertising, the voyeurs of this world enjoy watching these kinds of videos. (Perhaps others would associate voyeurism with something else, I for me would consider watching other people opening the luggage of third parties to be voyeurism.)

DISCLAIMERS:

2) I am not criticising/blaming/finger-pointing anyone for making such videos nor for watching these videos, I merely wish to draw attention to the fact that people don’t lose their luggage for their personal enjoyment nor for the profit or enjoyment of others.

I question the morality of an activity that I personal find immoral and repulsive. Losing luggage can be quite dramatic and psychologically damaging depending on the contents. The thought of having that content paraded on YouTube would for anyone make for sleepless nights.

Airports

It seems that airports have a real issue with lost luggage. Since Covid, it appears airports have been struggling to handle the quantities of luggage. I personally know of one airport (not mentioning any names here) which has an entire hanger full of lost luggage. They don’t scan the baggage tags and they don’t notify the passengers that their luggage has arrived. Instead a passenger may (provided they have the correct documentation) enter the hanger and search for their luggage, and this they do on their own whim: they aren’t notified, they have to go to the airport and search by themselves.

Since they don’t get notified by the airport, there are quite a few people who never actually realise that their luggage has arrived and is waiting for them, having made the assumption that the airport will notify them upon the arrival of their lost luggage.

In addition, finding your luggage in a hanger full with other peoples baggage is a non-trivial task. So even if people do turn up at the airport requesting their luggage, they might well be overwhelmed by the sight of a hanger full of lost luggage.

Of course, I assume this is not the case for the majority of airports. I have heard of one major airport (as described above) and have heard of rumours that other airports have similar issues. Optimistically I make the assumption that not all airports have these issues nor deal with lost luggage in the same manner.

Personal items

I have not viewed any videos on YouTube (not even the one linked in this article) and perhaps all people posting these video avoid personal items, I do not know. However if you imagine that someone on YouTube opens your bag and finds your dirty underwear or your personal sexual aids or your holiday gifts for those distant relations or whatever else you placed in that bag, how would you feel about it?

I know of at least one person who has a psychological fear of having her lost bag being opened by a stranger. I just hope this person has not yet discovered that people film this and put it up on YouTube.

Legality versus Morality

Laws reflect the moral norms of society. Moral: Thou shalt not murder, hence laws against killing. Moral: Thou shalt not steal, hence laws against robbery. However the authors of the Bible didn’t envision airports and lost luggage, else: Thou shalt not open others peoples luggage might have made into the top-ten commandments.

Perhaps the closest moral precedent is do onto others as you would have them do to you. Of course, if you have no problem with having you dirty underwear going viral on YouTube, then this does not apply to you.

Legally this is perfectly ok thing to be doing. The airport waits for the passengers to turn up, if within a year, no one comes, the airport sells the bags to the highest bidder, who then becomes the new owner: lock, stock and barrel.

Now why does the airport not simply scan the baggage tag and inform the passengers? All these bags have baggage tags and a single scan would identify the owner. The airport I know of simply has not got the stuff to do that. I also don’t know which university degree one requires to operate a scanning device however, from my experience, scanning barcodes with a scanner isn’t rocket science, it can actually be a very meditative task.

Personal Opinionated Views - myPOV.

My take is that this is an immoral activity. Morals for me being the misty grey zone between the respect for the family unit (would you open the luggage of your grandmother and parade her underwear on YouTube?) and the laws of society (the privilege to open and examining other peoples luggage, once paid for, is a perfectly legal activity).

Morals are personal and individual however provide the societal glue ensuring that a surveillance state remains unnecessary, and for me, opening third party luggage on YouTube is not societally beneficial.

To anyone intending to do this or anyone watching these types of videos, ask yourself how you would feel if it were your luggage?

For creators: sure you might be able to finance your next holiday from the advertising revenue, however I just hope you don’t lose your luggage.

It was a wonderful morning. The night had been a pleasant mild evening with a light breeze and warm wind. The sun was up early to greet all the animals as they began their day. So too the Dog and the Fish who meant for an early morning chat.

Dog: Morning Fish!

Fish: Morning Dog, what’s up with you? You look a bit green around the gills.

Dog: Bad night sleep, I was up all night barking up the wrong tree. Just couldn’t get these thoughts outta my head.

Fish: Are you overthinking something again? You tend to do that.

Dog: No, I’m stuck in a loop reflecting on my previous relationships. I spoke to the Panda last night. The Panda told me something that stuck with me.

Dog(cont): In talking to the Panda I realised that I’ve always taken on a supportive role in my relationships, the carer if you will.

Fish: How do you mean that? Supportive can mean many things: financial, emotional, physical, intellectually, time, effort, and so on. Did you always have the feeling that your provided support for your partner?

Dog: Looking back, I have the feeling that I’ve given more than I got in relationships and ironically my partner always need more than me. I mean emotional support here, being there in times of need and constantly listening to worries about something or another. The tower of strength.

Fish: Did you do this consciously or is it something that happened as the relationship developed?

Dog: To be honest, I believe I unconsciously I chose my partner on the basis of needing support. Unfortunately, since they needed support, they simple can’t give support. So I was left out in the cold when I needed support.

Dog (cont): But I didn’t know this until last night as I was talking to the Panda. I always just believed that I had bad taste in partners.

Fish: So unconsciously you chose someone who was bad for you in the long term but good in the short term?

Dog: I suppose in the short term it was fulfilling to provide support but in the long term my energy levels dropped. As soon as my supportive energy dissipated, the relationship normally ended. So yes, each relationship became a futureless dystopia as soon as I needed supported from my partner.

Fish: But why would you continually get into the same type of relationship?

Dog (With a look that could kill): …

Fish (cont): Wait! I take that back, it is so hard to discern emotional feelings and ever harder, emotionally recognise those patterns. It simply takes a lot of time.

Dog: Indeed, that is very true. I have been reflecting on the fact that I have always gotten into the same types of relationship, that is, that I always take over the supportive role in the relationship.

Dog (cont): Last night the Panda said something that made me think. The point the Panda made was, that perhaps I need to be needed, a kind of need for neediness.

Fish: A need to be needed? Interesting. You mean you needed to have the feeling that someone needs you? That you have someone who requires you to be there?

Dog: Yes, so I needed to have a feeling I am needed by some other person. So in providing support for my partners, I was needed by my partner. Thus I was fulfilling my need for being needed!

Fish: Didn’t friends or relations give you that feeling?

Dog: Not in the same way. Certainly my family didn’t give me the feeling I was needed and friends were not close enough to give that level of neediness.

Fish: I guess if you do not grow up with a loving and supportive family, then you might well need that feeling of meaning something to someone. Without having that feeling of being needed, one sees no purpose in life and one can be a little lost.

Dog: Yes that sums it up very well. Ironically I feel myself better when I provide support for someone else. Unfortunately not having realised that I myself take up that role in a relationship, I blame my partner for always taking so much not giving me support when it gets too much for me.

Conversational our two friends paused here to reflect upon what had been said. Both where very experienced in the development of socio-economic models for the further development of the interrelated correlations of the animal kingdom. But in addition to that, they found a great deal of pleasure in simple chat between friends.

Fish: I don’t know about you, but sometimes things come together in strange ways. I was reading this article just yesterday about parentification and it could provide you with an insight into where your need to be needed is coming from.

Dog: Parentification? C’est quoi ?

Fish: Basically the articles author is trying to find out how psychotherapists deal with all the difficult issues of their patients. How can someone deal with so much pain and still enjoy their job? The interesting thing is that it’s related to their childhood.

Dog: I assumed psychotherapists probably just have their own psychotherapists. What does their childhood have to do with it?

Fish: The theory is that children that grow up in a difficult childhood where they were forced to take up a parenting role, be it for their siblings, parents or friends, become caring people and actually seek this role out.

Fish (cont): Emotional what a child learns in becoming a parenting-figure at such an early age is that helping someone makes that someone happy but more importantly it also improves the situation for themselves. So they develop a feedback loop: helping someone to be happy makes them feel better and that makes themselves feel happy.

Dog: How does this relate to the psychotherapists?

Fish: The article makes the claim large percentage of psychotherapists involved in the research had these bad childhoods. In later life they still feed off this happiness feedback loop, basically they do not focus on the bad issues, rather they have a kick of joy when they can help their patients. It’s the kick of joy that they experienced as children. This in turn makes their job so enjoyable for them.

Dog: Ok, I understand: they have a need to help someone for they own personal happiness. Are you perhaps suggesting that I also have a need to help people for my own personal happiness? So in my case the need to be needed and the need to help people come together in one person.

Fish: That’s why I enjoy talking to you, your are open to reflection on yourself.

Dog: Thank you Fish, I’m glad I could make you happy.

Fish: I bet you are!

Dog: Wait …. Ok, got me there.

…. pause ….

Dog : It does seem a little ironic that the best people come from the worst families.

Fish: You mean people who develop this parentification tend to be more caring about others around them?

Dog: Yes and it is a pity that a brutal upbringing is what is required for such simple acts as sharing, caring and happiness.

Fish: That would be a generalisation as there are plenty of people who are nice to the fellow travellers on spaceship Earth who didn’t experience a bad childhood however I agree, it is strange that human nature has this characteristic that hate can make loving people.

Dog: Hate can make love, that is so true. One only has to look at abusive relationships to see that.

Fish: Abusive relationships, masochistic relationships, sadistic relationships, you name, humans have a name for it.

…pause…

Fish: Have you thought about an alternative to your model of always getting into a relationship with partners that need support?

Dog: Well that’s a little difficult, there has to be a right balance between giving and taking.

Fish: Too much giving, not enough taking can also be a problem. So getting into a relationship with someone who has experienced parentification, for someone who also has the need for neediness, could be too much of a good thing.
